Universal Media Discs (UMDs) store a broad range of digital content use it all !
Universal Media Discs UMDs are a kind of digital disks produced by Sony Corporation to be used on their Sony Play Station Portable only. It is a proprietary technology that is only exclusive for the PSP and they can hold much more content within their 1.8 gigabytes of storage memory.
There are two possible future enhancements and product support reasons that Sony developed the Universal Media Discs UMDs which are; the Universal Media Discs UMDs have a shutter similar to the one on the three and a half floppy disks that protects the inner part of the disk form damage and secondly auto loading capacities.
Universal Media Discs UMDs are created to be compatible with future technologies of automated slot loading mechanisms. Currently only the PlayStation Portable supports the Universal Media Discs UMDs format and hence only the developers of PSP content can create Universal Media Discs UMDs.
In this era of digital technology, any device that can support and contain a large amount of content is a must have. Sony Corporation has always been leading the competition in developing such media devices and technology. The UMD works like any DVD disc but Sony developed its own copy protection than the DVD’s regional coding or third party encryption technology. This UMD is great for consumers who need to store a large amount of data on them to use on their PlayStation Portable devices.
This is because with the 1.8 gigabytes storage memory, it beats all other PSP storage devices. The specs of the UMDs are as follows; Dimensions; 65mm by 64mm by 4.2mm, Weight; Approximately 10 grammes, Diameter; 60mm, Maximum capacity; 1.8GB, Laser Wavelength; 660nm(red laser), UMD Audio; Codec ATRAC3plus, PCM, (MPEG4 AVC).
The disc is relatively smaller in size than the actual CD. Although it is not recordable, the UMD disc is greatly an advanced technology that will definitely help users store more content for their PSPs.
